An Effective Flower Care Guide for Sunflower Bouquets

by Robert Canning on April 22, 2022

The appeal of sunflowers can’t be denied. Their beauty, their ability to brighten anyone’s day, and the memories they evoke are equally intoxicating. When you think about sunflowers, a thousand images might spring to mind. You might think of a gorgeous sunflower field stretching out far beyond what the human eye can see (does anyone have a good photo?). Maybe you picture a quaint farm or an image from The Wizard of Oz. Or perhaps you picture your father sitting beside you during ball games, chomping away on sunflower seeds.

Sunflowers are beautiful; there is no doubt. If you have a bouquet of sunflowers and want to know how to make them last as long as possible, this article is for you!

An Effective Flower Care Guide for Sunflower Bouquets

1 - Expose them to sunlight

Just a couple of hours a day of direct sunlight will do the trick. In fact, a half-hour of sunlight per day is all your sunflowers will need to retain the fullness and freshness of their petals.

2 - Make sure they have water

Water them once or twice a week. To make sure they have enough water, submerge the stems of the flowers in water. If the water level rises above the bottom petals of the flowers, you’re good to go.

3 - Cut the stems

After you have exposed your sunflowers to the sun, you may notice that their stems have dried out. While this is not a problem in the long term, it does make your bouquet look unattractive. To remedy this situation, cut about an inch off the bottom of the stems. Be sure to cut the stems at an angle so that the cut end faces downwards, granting it a better chance of absorbing water.

4 - Treat the water

Bacteria will thrive in water if it is not properly cared for. To avoid this, add a drop of liquid bleach to the water.

5 - Use water from a water source that is free of fluoride

While fluoride isn’t something that is easily understood, it is something that can be detrimental to flowers. To be extra safe, remove fluoride from the water you use to water your sunflowers.

6 - Keep your flowers in a cool, dry place

To keep your sunflowers from wilting and turning brown, it is a good idea to keep them in a cool, dry place. Make sure that they aren’t exposed to extreme temperatures, however, like those found in a hot attic or outside on a scorching hot day.

Conclusion

If you want your sunflowers to last, take good care of them. Following these steps will ensure that they keep their colour and stay fresh. If you want to make sure your sunflowers live up to their full potential and retain the beauty of their young selves, you want to give them what they need. Just a little bit of direct sunlight, water, and the right kind of water is enough to keep the gorgeous petals as beautiful as they were the day they were picked.
