Peonies in Dubai 2026: The Complete Guide to Buying, Caring For, and Gifting Peonies

Last updated: 8 May 2026

Peonies are the flower Dubai waits for. They arrive on a freight schedule, bloom for a fleeting six to eight weeks, and disappear again until next spring. If you've ever wondered why your favourite florist's Instagram suddenly fills with ruffled, voluminous blooms in May and then goes quiet by July, this is the reason. Peony season in Dubai runs roughly from late April through late June, peaking in May, and the window for getting them at their absolute best is short.

This guide covers everything we get asked about peonies at Upscale & Posh: when peony season actually starts in the UAE, which varieties travel best, how to make a fresh-cut peony bloom on cue, what they cost in Dubai versus elsewhere, what they symbolise, and how to gift them well. We've sourced and arranged peonies for Dubai homes, weddings, and corporate gifts for over a decade — what follows is the working guide we wish someone had handed us when we started.

What Are Peonies, Briefly

Peonies (genus Paeonia) are perennial flowering plants native to Asia, Europe, and western North America. They produce some of the most dramatic, ruffled, fragrant blooms in floristry — heads the size of a softball, layered with up to 300 petals on the densest doubles. There are three broad types: herbaceous peonies (the most common cut flower), tree peonies (woody, rarely cut), and Itoh peonies (a hybrid prized for its yellows and unusual colours). Cut peonies last roughly 5–10 days in a vase if cared for properly, and that lifespan can be doubled with the right technique.

When Is Peony Season in Dubai?

Peonies are available in Dubai from late April to late June, with the peak supply window in May. A second, smaller New Zealand and Chilean season runs roughly October to December, but availability is thinner and prices are higher. Outside these windows, fresh peonies are essentially unavailable in the UAE — anything labelled "peony" in mid-summer or January is most likely a peony-style ranunculus or a faux stem.

The reason the season is short is biology: peonies are northern-hemisphere perennials that need a deep winter chill to bloom. They're cut as buds at farms in the Netherlands, France, Israel, the United States, and (in autumn) New Zealand and Chile, then flown into Dubai. Holland is the dominant supply for our spring season — most of the peonies arriving at Dubai Flower Centre in May come through Aalsmeer.

Peony season month-by-month in Dubai

  • Late April: First arrivals from Israel and the south of France. Mostly Sarah Bernhardt and Coral Charm. Limited stock, premium pricing.
  • May: Peak season. Full Dutch supply lands. Widest variety of colours and forms. Best value of the year.
  • June: Tail of the season. Stems grow shorter, blooms slightly smaller, but still excellent quality.
  • July to September: Off-season. No reliable fresh supply.
  • October to December: Limited southern-hemisphere supply (NZ, Chile). Smaller volumes, higher prices.
  • January to March: Off-season. Plan for tulips, ranunculus or anemones if you need that ruffled, romantic look.

The Best Peony Varieties for Dubai

Six peony varieties laid out flat — burgundy, blush, coral, white, pink, yellow Itoh — popular peony types available in Dubai
Six of the peony varieties most commonly imported into Dubai in May and June.

Not every peony variety travels the 5,000 kilometres from a Dutch farm to a Dubai apartment equally well. These are the varieties we order on repeat, in order of how reliably they perform in the UAE climate:

1. Sarah Bernhardt (pale pink, double)

The classic. Soft blush pink, generously ruffled, lightly fragrant. Sarah Bernhardt has been bred since 1906 and remains the most-shipped peony in the world for good reason: it opens reliably, holds for a week, and looks like every painting of a peony you've ever seen. If you're new to peonies, start here.

2. Coral Charm (coral, semi-double)

Coral Charm — opens hot coral, fades to peach to ivory over five days.

The Instagram star. Opens hot coral and fades through peach to ivory over five days — three flowers in one. Coral Charm is the variety that turned peonies into a viral wedding trend. We have to ration it in May because demand always outstrips supply.

3. Duchesse de Nemours (ivory white, double)

The wedding workhorse. Ivory white with a hint of lemon at the centre, sweetly fragrant. The most reliable white peony for Dubai weddings — opens on time, photographs beautifully, holds in heat better than most whites.

4. Red Charm (deep red, semi-double)

The drama. A deep, velvety crimson with a bomb-like centre. Reads as black-red in low light. Excellent for autumn-into-winter dinner-table arrangements when the southern-hemisphere supply lands.

5. Bartzella Itoh (lemon yellow, semi-double)

The unicorn. A herbaceous-tree peony hybrid that produces large lemon-yellow blooms with a coral flare at the centre. Rare in Dubai because Itohs are expensive at source and hard to ship — when we have them, they don't last long on the website.

6. Festiva Maxima (white with red flecks, double)

The heritage choice. Pure white with a few crimson flecks at the centre, very fragrant. A Victorian-era variety that still outperforms modern whites for fragrance.

How to Care for Cut Peonies in Dubai's Climate

The basic peony care setup: clean vase, sharp scissors, fresh water.

Dubai's heat is the enemy of every cut flower, and peonies are sensitive — but if you follow the basics they'll outlast almost anything else in your vase. Here's the full protocol we give every customer:

Step 1: Receive them in bud, not in bloom

Peonies are cut and shipped at the "marshmallow stage" — the bud is soft to the touch, showing colour, but tightly closed. Do not panic if your peonies arrive looking like green golf balls. That's correct. A peony cut in full bloom won't survive the trip. They're meant to open at your home, on your timing.

Step 2: Cut, soak, and warm

The moment they arrive: take them out of the wrap, cut 2–3 cm off the bottom of each stem on a sharp diagonal, and submerge the stems immediately in warm water (around 30–35°C) for the first hour. Warm water encourages the bud to drink and start opening. After the first hour, switch to cool water for the rest of the vase life.

Step 3: Strip lower foliage

Any leaves below the waterline will rot and contaminate the water. Strip them. Leave the upper leaves — peony foliage is part of the look.

Step 4: Choose the right spot in your home

The single biggest factor in peony vase life in Dubai is where you put them. Avoid: direct sun, the path of an air-conditioning vent, the top of a fridge, beside a fruit bowl (ripe fruit emits ethylene, which kills peonies fast). Choose: a cool, shaded spot away from drafts. A dining table that catches morning light only is ideal.

Step 5: Refresh water every 48 hours

Change the vase water every two days, recut the stems by a centimetre each time on a fresh diagonal, and rinse the vase. Peonies drink heavily as they open — water levels drop fast. Top up daily.

Step 6: Mist gently if your home is dry

If you run AC most of the day (most Dubai homes do), the air around the vase will be very dry. A gentle mist on the petals once a day extends the open-bloom phase by 1–2 days.

Step 7: To slow them down — refrigerate overnight

Hosting on Saturday but the peonies arrived Wednesday? Wrap loosely in paper, place stems in a tall glass of water, and put the whole arrangement in the fridge each night (away from fruit). This will hold them at the bud stage for an extra 2–4 days.

What Do Peonies Symbolise?

Peonies carry a layered set of meanings depending on the colour and the culture, which is what makes them such a versatile gifting flower. The headline meanings:

  • Romance, prosperity, and good fortune — across most cultures, peonies are the flower of happy marriage and good luck. They are the traditional 12th wedding anniversary flower.
  • The flower of riches and honour — in Chinese culture, the peony is the unofficial national flower and is associated with wealth, rank, and beauty. It appears in art, textiles, and poetry as a symbol of prosperity.
  • Bashfulness and feminine beauty — in Victorian flower language, peonies signalled a beautiful but slightly shy admiration. The myth attached to the flower is that nymphs hid in its petals.
  • Healing — the genus name Paeonia comes from Paeon, the physician of the Greek gods. The plant has been used in traditional medicine for over 2,000 years.

Peony colours and what they mean

  • Pink: romance, marriage, prosperity. The default peony for weddings, anniversaries, and Mother's Day.
  • White: purity, apology, dignity. White peonies were traditionally given as a way to say sorry.
  • Red: honour, respect, deep love. The peony of choice for milestone gifts and mature romance.
  • Coral: excitement, new beginnings, a touch of playfulness. A favourite for engagements and 30th birthdays.
  • Yellow: new beginnings, fresh starts. Rare and slightly unusual — a memorable choice.

Peony Pricing in Dubai: What to Expect

Peonies are not cheap, and they shouldn't be. They're imported on chilled cargo from Europe, harvested by hand at a precise stage, and they have a two-week window from farm to vase. Expect to pay between AED 30 and AED 70 per stem at retail in Dubai, depending on variety, season timing, and grade. Coral Charm and Itoh varieties sit at the top of that range; Sarah Bernhardt sits at the bottom.

A few rules of thumb for Dubai peony pricing:

  • Peak May supply is the best value of the year. Late April and late June carry a 20–30% premium.
  • Bouquets of 10 to 20 stems are the sweet spot for impact. Anything under 10 stems gets lost as a peony arrangement.
  • Mixed peony and rose bouquets stretch the budget without losing the peony look — a 5-stem peony plus 12-stem rose mix gives you the same visual presence as a pure peony bouquet at roughly 60% of the cost.
  • Faux peonies have improved dramatically — for permanent home styling rather than gifting, a high-end silk arrangement can be a sensible 12-month alternative.

How to Order Peonies in Dubai

A few practical tips for getting the best peonies during the season:

  1. Order 24–48 hours ahead when possible. Same-day peonies are usually available in May, but the pick of the stems goes to advance orders.
  2. Tell the florist when you want them open. "I need them fully open by Saturday evening" is a useful brief. We can hand-pick stems at slightly different stages so the bouquet peaks on the night.
  3. Ask about the variety, not just the colour. "Pink peonies" can mean Sarah Bernhardt, Monsieur Jules Elie, or Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt — they look different and last different lengths of time.
  4. Refrigerated delivery matters in summer. If your peonies are travelling more than 30 minutes from the florist to the recipient in May, ask about cold-chain delivery. Heat shock during delivery is the main reason peonies fail to open at home.

At Upscale & Posh, our peony collection launches in late April each year and runs through June. We offer same-day delivery across Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, with refrigerated transport during the hot months.

How to Gift Peonies in Dubai

An intimate Dubai dining table with a low peony arrangement at its centre.

Peonies are one of the most reliable "yes, this person will be impressed" gifts in floristry — but the way you gift them matters as much as the flowers themselves.

For weddings and anniversaries

Peonies are the 12th wedding anniversary flower, but they work for any anniversary that lands in their season. For weddings, our most-requested peony bridal bouquet is Sarah Bernhardt and Duchesse de Nemours mixed with eucalyptus — see our wedding flowers collection for full bridal bouquet options.

For birthdays

Match the colour to the recipient. Coral Charm for someone bold and playful; Sarah Bernhardt for the romantic; Festiva Maxima for the sophisticated. A pure peony bouquet at a milestone birthday makes more impact than almost any other flower.

For corporate gifting

Peonies signal premium without trying. A 15-stem white peony arrangement for a board dinner, or a single-stem peony set for a VIP client gift, both punch well above their weight.

For "just because" gifts

This is where peonies shine hardest. They're the flower of small moments dressed up as big ones — Tuesday afternoon, no occasion, just because. They make the receiver feel chosen.

Common Peony Problems and How to Fix Them

"My peonies arrived but they won't open"

Most likely the buds were cut a touch early or have gone into shock. Try the warm-water trick (Step 2 above) for an extra hour. If they're still tight after 24 hours, gently roll the bud between your palms — the warmth and pressure cracks the protective wax that sometimes seals the petals. Usually opens them within hours.

"They opened, then went floppy"

This is almost always under-watering. Peonies drink heavily when they open. Recut the stems, place them in deep water (10 cm or more), and they usually rebound within 4–6 hours.

"There are ants on my peonies"

Normal. Peonies produce a sweet nectar on the bud that attracts ants — they're not damaging the flower. Gently shake them off before bringing the bouquet indoors, or rinse the buds under cool water.

"The petals are dropping after only three days"

Three things: AC vent (move them), ripe fruit nearby (move them), or they were past their prime when delivered (call your florist).

Frequently Asked Questions About Peonies in Dubai

When is peony season in Dubai?

Peony season in Dubai runs from late April to late June, with peak supply in May. A smaller secondary season from October to December brings southern-hemisphere peonies (mostly from New Zealand and Chile), but volumes are lower and prices higher.

How long do cut peonies last in Dubai?

Cut peonies typically last 5 to 10 days in Dubai homes, depending on variety, vase placement, and care. Sarah Bernhardt and Duchesse de Nemours hold longest. Coral Charm has a shorter open-bloom phase but transforms colour as it ages, which extends its visual interest.

Are peonies expensive in Dubai?

Yes — peonies are imported on chilled cargo from Europe and have a short season, so they sit at the premium end of the cut-flower market in Dubai. Expect AED 30 to AED 70 per stem at retail. The best value of the year is mid-May, when full Dutch supply lands and prices stabilise.

What do peonies symbolise?

Peonies symbolise romance, prosperity, good fortune, and a happy marriage. In Chinese culture they represent wealth and honour and are sometimes called the "king of flowers". Pink peonies are most associated with romance and weddings; white with apology and dignity; red with deep love and respect; coral with new beginnings.

Why are my peonies not opening?

Peonies are cut at the bud stage and meant to open at home. If they aren't opening within 24–48 hours, try cutting the stems again on a sharp diagonal and placing them in warm water (30–35°C) for an hour, then return to cool water. Gently rolling the bud between your palms can break the protective wax that occasionally seals the petals.

Can I get peonies delivered same-day in Dubai?

Yes — during the May–June season, most luxury florists in Dubai (including Upscale & Posh) offer same-day delivery on peonies if ordered before mid-afternoon. Outside the season, fresh peonies are essentially unavailable, but premium silk peonies are an option.

The Final Word on Peonies

Peonies aren't a flower you buy on autopilot. They reward planning, climate-aware care, and a florist who knows their varieties. Get those three right and you'll have an arrangement on your dining table in May that genuinely stops conversation. Get them wrong and you'll have a vase of green tennis balls on Wednesday.

If you're new to peonies, start with a 10-stem Sarah Bernhardt bouquet from a florist who'll deliver them at the right stage, follow the seven-step care guide above, and put them somewhere cool. That's the entire formula. The rest is in the petals.

Upscale & Posh is Dubai's luxury flower delivery service, sourcing imported peonies, garden roses, and seasonal florals for homes, weddings, and corporate gifts across the UAE since 2013. Visit our online store or browse our full flower collection.
